Dave Berg has been named director of the Transportation Department, effective immediately. Berg has been interim director since Goran Sparrman left the position in September.
"We're lucky to have someone with Dave's experience to lead the department," said City Manager Steve Sarkozy. "Residents perennially name transportation as a top issue in the city, and Dave will play a key role in addressing future transportation challenges."
Consisting of 84 employees, including 12 signal shop staff at the Bellevue Service Center, the Transportation Department provides critical services for Bellevue. Important transportation issues for the future will include access to and from downtown, traffic management and neighborhood safety, and regional issues such as the East Link light rail project.
Berg began his tenure at the City of Bellevue in 1999 as the Assistant Director of Capital Projects; he was named Deputy Director of the Department in 2006. Prior to joining the City of Bellevue, Berg worked for 16 years at the state Department of Transportation's Northwest Region, holding a variety of engineering management positions.
Berg graduated from the University of Washington with a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in civil engineering.
