John Chelminiak, first elected to the City Council in 2004, is a champion for human services. The Deputy Mayor is the council liaison to the Human Services Commission and a member of both King County's Committee to End Homelessness and the Eastside Human Services Forum.
John is the council liaison with the Human Services Commission. He is also a member of the Growth Management Policy Board of the Puget Sound Regional Council, Trade Development Alliance Board and Bellevue Convention Center Authority Board.
John is the senior manager for Public Sector Services at Waste Management, the nation's largest environmental solutions provider. He is the only council member to wrestle a bear, surviving a mauling near his vacation cabin at Lake Wenatchee in 2010.
Prior to joining the council, John served on the Planning Commission. He has served on the board of Seattle's O'Dea High School since 1999. He was also a member of the Coordinating Committee for Regional Water Supply Planning.
John holds a bachelor's degree in communications from Washington State University. The Alliance of Eastside Agencies named him Elected Official of the Year in 2011.
John and his wife Lynn live in the Vuecrest neighborhood with daughter Megan, who attends Bellevue High School. His stepdaughter, Morgan, is a graduate of the University of Washington.
