Residents can learn how to navigate around construction related to the Interstate 405 "braids" project at a state Department of Transportation open house Wednesday, June 9, 4 to 7 p.m., in the first-floor concourse at City Hall.
On hand to provide all kinds of information about the project will be officials with WSDOT and the general contractor, Guy F. Atkinson Construction LLC, along with representatives from the City of Bellevue and the Bellevue Downtown Association.
To reduce cars weaving across lanes to get on or off northbound I-405 between Northeast Eighth Street and State Route 520, WSDOT will construct multi-level "braided" on- and off-ramps. The project should reduce congestion and improve safety.
In January Atkinson broke ground for the first phase of the project, construction of a new Northeast 12th Street bridge, to be longer and wider than the current one, with a separate bicycle-pedestrian path. The new bridge will also be higher, allowing clearance for the new ramps.
For the two years the new overpass is under construction, two of the four lanes on the current Northeast 12th Street bridge will be closed. Only one sidewalk will be available.
The Bellevue Braids project is scheduled for completion in 2012.
