A fire that started in or around a dryer Tuesday night caused $60,000 damage to a Lake Hills apartment. Bellevue fire crews extinguished the fire and rescued a cat trapped in the apartment. There were no injuries to firefighters or residents.
At about 9:30 p.m., a resident of a neighboring apartment reported the blaze at the Sammamish View Apartments on the 16100 block of Southeast Eastgate Way. The fire appears to have started at the dryer and quickly spread throughout the laundry closet and into an apartment hallway.
On Wednesday, Bellevue fire investigators combed the scene for clues about the fire's origin, but the cause is believed to be accidental.
The apartment residents were not at home at the time; occupants in the adjoining apartment units were able to escape safely. Despite some smoke damage, neighbors were able to return to their apartments. The three residents of the damaged apartment will stay with friends until their apartment is repaired.
Firefighters checking the apartment after the fire found the residents' cat, suffering from smoke inhalation. Firefighter/EMTs transported the cat to an animal hospital. The cat was in stable condition Wednesday morning.
