Bellevue elementary schools will join schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day on Wednesday.
Students from Cherry Crest, Newport Heights, Sherwood Forest, Somerset and Spiritridge elementary schools will walk to school Wednesday along with parents and teachers. The City Council will proclaim Wednesday Walk to School Day in Bellevue.
School and PTA volunteers, with assistance from city staff, organized the event. Parents and students will walk a prescribed route to school and pick up additional children as they go. Pedbee, the city's traffic safety mascot, will also be on hand at Cherry Crest and Spiritridge to hand out toys and traffic safety activity workbooks.
Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need for safe walking routes to school, and highlight issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.
