Crews working for the state Department of Transportation were able to demolish the Wilburton Tunnel ahead of schedule over the weekend, so southbound Interstate 405 will be open for traffic this coming weekend (Aug. 22-25).

All southbound lanes of I-405 were closed between downtown Bellevue and Interstate 90 over each of the first two weekends of August. The tunnel had to be removed to make way for the addition of lanes as part of WSDOT's I-405 South Bellevue Widening Project.

Despite the closures, many motorists heeded warnings and chose alternate routes, minimizing delays on the highway.
