The City of Bellevue intends to enhance safety along West Lake Sammamish Parkway by providing a multi-use trail along the west side of the roadway, from Interstate 90 to Bellevue's northern city limit. After two years of intensive public involvement, the City Council in 2005 approved a design for the improved parkway. A planning timeline provides additional information.

At a June 2009 open house, aspects of the project were covered, including which segment of the roadway should be improved first, landscaping, retaining walls and the general timeline.
At a December 2008 open house, neighborhood residents weighed in on aesthetic details from the West Lake Sammamish Parkway Design Report, interest in undergrounding power lines and a desire to maximize the size of landscaped buffer areas. Other issues brought up concerned driveway access, storm water drainage, loss of parking or landscaping and a planned traffic signal at Southeast 34th Street.
"Here's What We're Thinking," a 2008 newsletter about the project, offers details about the "design report phase."
The West Lake Sammamish Parkway Project is in the pre-design stage. Given constraints on the city's budget, funding for this project may be delayed. The project's status will be updated at the end of the year.
