The Safe Routes to School Program encourages agencies to increase the number of children walking to school on several fronts: engineering, education, and enforcement. This project will construct 420 feet of new sidewalk along the east side of West Lake Sammamish Parkway to connect neighborhoods to the existing crosswalk serving Sunset Elementary (Issaquah School District); teach students the habits and benefits of walking to school safely through school assemblies featuring Pedbee, a walking school bus, and a new take-home traffic safety board game; and educate drivers on the value of heeding school zone speed limits through the addition of 48 enforcement shifts by the Bellevue Police Department.
This project will extend southward the non-motorized facilities to be constructed by Phase 1 of the West Lake Sammamish Parkway project. This project is expected to be open to the public by the start of the 2014 school year.
The three Transportation CIP Programs providing match support for the Safe Routes to School project are included in the 2013-2019 CIP adopted by Council on December 3, 2012 (Ordinance No. 6089).
