Northup Way, a major east-west route in north Bellevue, has narrow lanes and shoulders for much of the way. It lacks turn lanes and offers inadequate pedestrian and bicycle facilities. The city is pursuing a set of improvements.

Between 108th Avenue Northeast and Bellevue Way

An open house for the Northup Way project was held Nov. 15, 2007, and organizers appreciated receiving several helpful comments, some of which will be incorporated into the planning effort. Staff will continue accepting comments on proposals, many of which are available for viewing on the Documents, Objectives and Timeline pages.

To share comments and questions about the project, contact Paul Krawczyk, the project manager (see contact information in the right column). After a preferred improvement plan is developed, staff will send out a newsletter to the surrounding area and post it to this web page.

Proposed Improvements from the 1996 Northup Way Corridor Study:

Add sidewalks on both sides of Northup Way where missing.
Add bike lanes on both sides of Northup Way, connecting the State Route 520 Bike Trail to Lake Washington Boulevard.
Widen roadway to include a two-way left turn lane.
Add landscaped medians or trees along Northup Way.
Improve the sight distance, street lighting, and driveway approaches.
Determine if improvements are needed at the following intersections: Northeast 33rd Place, 108th Avenue Northeast, 116th Avenue Northeast and Bellevue Way.

Northup Way's Design Report (2007): Work this year will reaffirm the need for the project improvements identified in the 1996 Corridor Study by updating traffic and engineering studies and by receiving input from all project stakeholders. The Design Report will also develop a phasing/implementation plan based on available funding and coordination with other projects on Interstate 405 and SR-520.

Benefits: Eventual construction will enhance safety for pedestrians and bicyclists by separating them from vehicular traffic and improving vehicular access to and from neighborhoods, offices and other adjacent businesses. Traffic capacity and safety will also be improved by adding turn lanes where needed.
