Proposed Improvements
The extension of Northeast 10th Street, to cost approximately $67 million (including design, right of way acquisition and construction) will occur in two stages:
First Stage
The City of Bellevue will build a new section of Northeast 10th Street from 116th Avenue Northeast between Overlake Hospital Medical Center's new South Tower and the new Group Health Bellevue Medical Center (both under construction) to the eastern edge of Interstate 405. The city will also make other related construction improvements east of the highway.
This stage is coordinated with the new hospital facilities. A pedestrian tunnel will be constructed under the new roadway linking the hospital and medical center. A southbound lane will be added to 116th Avenue Northeast between Northeast Eighth Street and the existing traffic signal at Overlake Hospital. The additional lane will improve access and circulation following completion of the second stage of the Northeast 10th Street Extension.
Second Stage
The state Department of Transportation will extend Northeast 10th Street from 112th Avenue Northeast, on an overpass across I-405, to the Overlake Hospital campus. The I-405-Northeast 10th Street Bridge project is intended to accommodate future ramps to/from SR 520, one additional lane in each direction on I-405 and WSDOT's I-405 congestion relief “braid” improvement project.
Benefits:
As downtown Bellevue continues to grow, the extension of Northeast 10th Street will:
- Improve circulation through a greater distribution of traffic.
- Provide convenient access and circulation to and from downtown and the Medical District.
- Improve pedestrian access and the crossing of I-405.
- Provide for future access to planned improvements reflected in the city's Downtown Implementation Plan and I-405 Master Plan.
