The extension of Northeast Fourth Street, from 116th Avenue Northeast to 120th Avenue Northeast, was completed and opened to traffic on Oct. 15, 2015. Phase 1 of the project extended Fourth Street to the Eastide Rail Corridor; Phase 2 extended the street to 120th Avenue.
The extension of Northeast Fourth, part of the Wilburton Connections effort, is designed to work in conjunction with two other road projects (120th Avenue Northeast corridor widening and Northeast Sixth Street extension) to improve mobility between downtown, the Bel-Red corridor and the Overlake area.
This new segment of Northeast Fourth Street is a five-lane arterial, with two travel lanes in each direction and a center turn lane where needed, with bike lanes and sidewalks on each side and a new signalized intersection at the 120th Avenue intersection.
The project allows a future pedestrian-bike trail or transit to use the railroad corridor. The new roadway section is projected to relieve congestion at nearby intersections, improve travel times and provide alternatives for vehicles, transit, freight, pedestrians and bicycles.
Construction began in April 2015 and was completed in October 2015.
