Latvian president visits Bellevue

Mayor Grant Degginger presents a book to Lilita Zatlere, the first lady of Latvia, while President Valdis Zatlers looks on.The president of Latvia came to Bellevue Monday. It's rare when a head of state visits our city, but Liepaja, Latvia is a sister city, so President Valdis Zatlers and his wife Lilita came to City Hall.

President Zatlers is in the area for a speaking engagement in Seattle this week. He wanted to come to Bellevue to personally thank the City Council for our sister city relationship. Mayor Grant Degginger welcomed the president, the first lady and other Latvian officials at a ceremony in the concourse at 10 a.m.

The mayor and other council members gave the president a tour of parts of City Hall. Parks staff then showed the Latvians the new Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center.
