In letters to the state Department of Transportation in 2006, Mayor Grant Degginger discussed city concerns about right of way and noise impacts. The Oct. 16, 2006 letter concerns the braided crossing project intended to improve the interchange between I-405 and State Route 520. The May 9, 2006 letter addresses improvements planned between State Route 169 in Renton and I-90 in Bellevue.
In an I-405 Interest Statement adopted on March 7, 2005, the City Council expressed support for I-405 improvements consistent with the Regional Mobility Interest Statement and the city's Downtown Implementation Plan. The statement also calls for environmental mitigation measures to protect the neighborhoods adjacent to the highway.
The I-405 Interest Statement is consistent with the "Regional Transportation Vision" drafted by the Council in 1999, which supported investment in high-capacity transit, regional bus service and expanded highways. In the Regional Mobility Interest Statement drafted in November of 2004, the City Council confirmed those priorities.
