Bellevue motorists headed toward Renton, or elsewhere this weekend, may want rethink their route and the timing of trips. The state Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will fully close Interstate 405 in Renton between SR 167 and the Maple Valley Highway (SR 169) from 2 a.m. Saturday, July 10, to 11 a.m. Sunday, July 11.
Extra congestion is expected on several alternate routes, such as I-90, I-5, SR 520 and SR 167 as drivers try to avoid the closure. A Mariner’s game on Saturday will make afternoon travel difficult. People who must travel around the area should plan ahead, even when using the detours, and try to travel before 10 a.m. or after 7 p.m.
The purpose of the I-405 closure is to remove the old Benson Road Bridge in order to build a new interchange and improve access. For more information, including maps of the detour routes, visit the WSDOT project web page.
