FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, June 9, 2010

Bike safety fairs this weekend

The Optimist Club of Issaquah will hold its fifth annual bike safety fairs this weekend in Issaquah and Bellevue to teach the importance of safe riding, and to provide a fun experience for families.

This year, the free events will take place from noon to 3 p.m., Saturday, June 12, at Issaquah Valley Elementary School, 555 Northwest Holly in Issaquah, off Newport Way; and from noon to 3 p.m., Sunday, June 13, at Newport Heights Elementary School, 5225 119th Ave. S.E. in southwest Bellevue, off Coal Creek Parkway.

Geared for children in kindergarten to fifth grade, bike safety fair attractions this year include:

  • Obstacle course: Children who bring their own bikes can participate in a bike obstacle course and get free bike tune-ups. Other attractions are bike registrations, face painting, and adult resources on health, safety, education and recreation.
  • Helmets: Free bike helmets (while supplies last) for children who don’t have helmets and whose families cannot afford one. Bellevue and Issaquah police will provide helmet fittings in their respective cities.
  • PedBee (in Bellevue only): PedBee, Bellevue's pedestrian safety mascot, will take a break from gathering pollen to attend the event. The fair's emphasis is on teaching children about bike safety, proper equipment, bike handling skills, and rules of the road.
  • Food Drive: Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food donations for school-age children, such as peanut butter, jams, canned fruit and 100-percent juices. During school breaks, demand at food banks for such items increases.

In addition to the Optimist Club, sponsors of the 2010 safety fairs include the Bellevue Transportation and Police departments, City of Issaquah, Overlake Hospital Medical Center, Children’s Hospital, Sports Authority, Prevail Credit Union, Beacon Plumbing, Heating & Mechanical, Banic Chiropractic, John L. Scott Real Estate in Issaquah, Red Robin, Regal Entertainment Group, Eastside Pediatric Dental Group, Encompass Northwest, Huntington Learning Center and Talking Rain.
