Receive email or text notification for updates on this project
For the second stage of 120th Avenue Northeast improvements, the city will realign and widen the existing roadway to five lanes from Northeast Seventh Street to Northeast 12th Street. Construction on Stage 1, from Northeast Fourth Street to Northeast Seventh Street, was completed in November.
Intersection signals at Northeast Eighth Street and Northeast 12th Street will be modified, and a new signal will be installed at Old Bel-Red Road/Lake Bellevue Drive. The project also will include bike lanes, sidewalks on both sides, landscaping, storm drainage and street lighting. Additionally, contaminated material at the site will be removed, soft soils will be stabilized and new water and sewer systems and a joint utility trench for future underground utilities will be constructed.
The project will provide an alternate link between downtown and the Bel-Red area, both projected for strong future growth. East Link light rail station will be located between 120th and 124th Avenue Northeast on Spring Boulevard.
This project will be phased into three Work Zones. The entire Stage 2 project is estimated to take about two years to complete. Tentative Work Zone Plan.
Work Zone 1 began in September 2014 and is estimated to continue through March 2015. This Work Zone, which goes from just south of NE 8th St to Old Bel-Red Road, includes: roadway widening on 120th Ave NE and NE 8th St; underground utility work, retaining wall installation, sidewalks, curb and gutter.
Expect the following impacts at Work Zone 1: daytime lane closures on 120th Ave NE south of NE 8th St; night work on NE 8th St and in the NE 8th St/120th Ave NE intersection with intermittent lane closures; Old Bel-Red Road (aka NE 10th Place) is permanently closed to through traffic between 120th Ave NE and 124th Ave NE. Bel-Red Road will re-open to through-traffic with a new alignment and intersection with 120th Ave NE later in the project. Access to area businesses and residences will be maintained during construction.
Work Zone 2 includes the east side of 120th Ave NE from Old Bel-Red Rd to NE 12th St. Work on Zone 2 began in early March 2015 and will continue through Fall 2015. Work activities include: underground utility work; retaining wall installation; new roadway alignments for NE Bel-Red Rd and 120th Ave NE; excavation and installation of new roadway, sidewalks, curb and gutter, street lighting and landscaping.
Expect the following impacts at Work Zone 2: daytime lane closures on 120th Ave NE, with flaggers controlling traffic when necessary for safety; temporary traffic signals across the NE 12th St and 120th Ave NE intersection; increased dump truck traffic; extensive tree removal along 120th Ave NE. Pedestrian traffic will be maintained on the west side of 120th Ave NE for this phase of work, and access to area businesses and residences will be maintained during construction.
Work Zone 3 will occur on the west side of 120th Avenue NE from Old Bel-Red Road to NE 12th St. More information about Work Zone 3 will be made available as work progresses in Work Zones 1 & 2.
