FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, August 21, 2012

Bellevue again named 'Best Workplace for Recycling'

For the fifth year in a row, Bellevue's environmental stewardship efforts have earned the city a "Best Workplace for Recycling and Waste Reduction" honor from King County.

The city was recognized by the county's Solid Waste Division for policies that reduce its impact on the environment. At Bellevue, employees participate in a comprehensive waste reduction and recycling program. Dedicated staff monitor the program and research ways to improve or enhance what is collected.

To qualify as a Best Workplace for Recycling this year, organizations had to meet five basic criteria as well as 10 additional waste reduction and recycling criteria, such as using reusable or compostable dishware in kitchens, collecting batteries for recycling or sending electronic invoices. Ninety-two businesses and agencies made the list this year.

Making the county's list five times and meeting the 2012 criteria, Bellevue made the county's honor roll.

Since implementing an Environmental Stewardship Initiative in 2007, the city has expanded recycling in public spaces. In addition, food waste is collected at City Hall, the Bellevue Service Center, community centers and fire stations.
